Jacob's eighth son was Asher, born to Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, who had earlier given birth to Gad. Nothing is recorded of the tribe founded by him beyond its holding a place in the list of the tribes. Asher and Simeon were the only tribes west of the Jordan which furnished no hero or judge for the nation, though Anna the prophetess belonged to the tribe of Asher. The prophecy of his father Jacob was brief.
Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob
a second son. Then Leah said, "How happy I am! The women will call me happy." So she named him Asher. (Genesis 30:12-13)
Asher's food will be rich; he will provide delicasies fit for a king. (Genesis 49:19)
