Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." So he was named Levi. (Genesis 29:34)
The third son of Jacob by Leah, Levi incurred the same malediction of a dying father that older brother Simeon incurred for an act of vengeance against Hamor and the Shechemites. [see Simeon]
"Simeon and Levi are brothers-
their swords are weapons of violence.
Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,
for they have killed men in their anger
and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury, so cruel!
I will scatter them in Jacob
and disperse them in Israel.
While Simeon eventually did have a tribe that was eventually unified into the tribe of Judah, Levi was never given land of their own. He and his three sons went down with Jacob into Egypt, where he died at the age of one hundred and thirty-seven years.
