The Hard Sayings of Jesus

by Francis Jamieson

Some of the followers of Jesus (John 6:60) found some of the things Jesus said "hard" or "difficult", and in spite of the fact that we generally think of Jesus as very frank and straightforward, compassionate and understanding, many of us who follow Jesus at a more distant date than his first disciples also find some of his sayings "hard". They might simply be hard to understand (like the story of the unjust steward, for example, in Luke 16) or, often, hard to accept because they require a commitment of which we have not yet found ourselves capable and sometimes even sound harsh, not at all taking into account human nature and the circumstances of our lives.

In this series, Fr. Francis Jamieson takes a look at some of these sayings and shows us what Jesus really meant when he spoke them.

  1. Fire and Division
  2. Flesh and Blood
  3. The Problem with Money
  4. Hating
  5. Let the Dead Bury the Dead
  6. Marriage and Divorce
  7. Mystification
  8. Using Money to Make Friends
  9. The Unforgivable Sin
  10. We Have Done Only Our Duty
