The Scourging of Our Lord at the Pillar
by Fr. Peter deSousa
Pray to the Holy Spirit and then prayerfully read Matthew 27 :20-26
Many of us saw Mel Gibson's movie : "The Passion". The scene of the
scourging was indeed horrible and painful to watch. If I was in Jesus'
place I would feel humiliated, terrified, helpless, at the mercy of
my tormentors.
Do I turn to God who alone is my refuge and the source of my strength
at such times? Do I seek his help?
Perhaps Pilate thought he would assuage the blood-thirst of the people
and they would pity Jesus, seeing him so cruelly inflicted. Washing
his hands of the death of Jesus was only to salve his own conscience.
Do I also try to avoid assuming responsibility when I have to make
unpopular decisions, in such devious ways?
Let me come out of my comfort zone and enter into the arena of life
where many victims of injustice need a voice to speak out on their
behalf, a helping hand to set them free. There is a price to get
involved, that I may have to pay. "As long as you did it to one of
these the least of my brothers and sisters, you did it to me" says
Jesus." (Mt 25:40,45)
Let us pray for and reach out to stand by and help all those who need
our voice and hands.
