The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus
by Fr. Peter deSousa
Pray to the Holy Spirit and prayerfully reflect on John 19:25-30
John speaks of Mary as Woman at the start and the end of Jesus
ministry. She is the new Eve, mother of the living who is there when
he changes water into wine at Cana (Jn 2) and now as he gives her to
us to be our Mother. She will also be there when the Church is born
at Pentecost in Acts 2.
His mission is accomplished on earth. He gives up his spirit. He
gives us his spirit to live in us so that we may continue his saving
mission on earth. Jesus now lives in us. "I have been put to death
with Christ on the cross, so that it is no longer I who live, but it
is Christ who lives in me. This life that I live now, I live by faith
in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me."
Gal 2: 19b,20.
As a man lives, so shall he die. We die many times in our lives. Each
death to selfishness and sin, to pride and anger, to unforgiveness and
revenge, to jealousy and falsehood, to coldness and indifference, to
pampering and asserting our Ego, is an opportunity to open our lives
to the Holy Spirit, who is the Lord and Giver of life. These many
little deaths will culminate in our death. These many little moments
of grace and new life will culminate in our Resurrection.
May Mary be there to assist us at the hour of our death and to lead us
into the Beatific vision.
