The Person of the Holy Spirit: Part 4
Memory Passage
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:1-2
Scripture Reading: Romans 8:9
You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
Scripture Reading: John 3:8
The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
Insights
The Holy Spirit is a part of the Holy Trinity with the Father and Son. In the Old Testament the Hebrew word (ruwach (pronounced roo'-akh)) was used when talking about the Spirit. This word literally means WIND, even the wind associated with a BREATH! In the New Testament the Greek word (pneuma (pronounced pnyoo'-mah)) was used which means a BREATH or a BREEZE! We can literally think of the Holy Spirit as the "Breath of God!"
Consider this!
Can you feel the breath of God? It is likened to the wind. While you can't see the wind, you can feel the breeze on your face. You can see the effects in the trees as the branches sway and in water as the waves ripple. The breath of God can be seen in the countenance of others, in the encouragement of a friend, in the Scriptures that speak to your heart, in the comfort during suffering, and in the prayers of someone who is fighting for your soul. As you go about your day, look for the breath of God.
Personal Reflection
- Think about this familiar chorus and write a prayer response.
- Breathe on me, breath of God.
Love and life that makes me free.
Breathe on me, breath of God.
Fan the flame within me.
Teach my heart, heal my soul,
speak the mind that in Christ we know
Take me to your sanctuary, breathe on me.
Speak to me, voice of God.
Soft and still inside my heart.
Speak to me, word of God,
comfort, heal, restore with love.
