The Filling of the Holy Spirit: Part 4
Memory Passage
Those who live according to the sinful
nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in
accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The
mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and
peace.
Romans 8:5-6
Scripture Reading: Luke 11:13
If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
Scripture Reading: John 3:34
For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.
Scripture Reading: Acts 5:32
We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."
Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:29-32
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Insights
"Let the preacher.burn his manuscript and depend on the Holy Spirit. If the
Spirit does not come to help him, let him be still and let the people go home
and pray that the Spirit will help him next Sunday." -Charles Haddon
Spurgeon, "The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit "
Consider this!
All believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit 100% of the time. Yet we experience
times of spiritual dryness and weakness contrasted by times of spiritual
refreshment and power. Know that God desires us to utilize the spiritual
resources He has provided for us. Never does He want us to embark on
ministry armed only with tools and talents of the flesh. Part of growing as a
believer is growing in our reliance on the Holy Spirit - His power and
permeating Presence through our lives and ministry.
Personal Reflection
- Scriptures tell us that we truly are indwelt by the Holy Spirit 100% of the time,
but do you ever struggle to believe that the Holy Spirit is active within you
24/7?
- What would it take for you to be more aware of His presence with you
throughout your day?
- As you think about your dependence on the Holy Spirit, consider the role that
relationships with other believers, Scripture, prayer, repentance, and humility
play in your life in terms of aiding you in becoming Spirit-filled. Is there any
area of your life that you are aware that you might be "quenching" the Holy
Spirit and not allowing yourself to be filled? What should you do about this?
Write down your thoughts.
