The Holy Spirit in Witness: Part 4
Memory Passage
The Spirit himself testifies with our
spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children then we are heirs -
heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in
order that we may also share in his glory.
Romans 8:16-17
Scripture Reading: Colossians 4:5
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
Insights
"The new convert, typically, is urgent, but can lack tact and discretion. The
older Christian has the wisdom of experience, but often lacks boldness and
urgency. Given this balance between zeal and tact in conduct, there is also a
balance in speech to be learned. The Christian speech must always be
gracious." -R. C. Lucas, The Message of Colossians and Philemon
Consider this!
How easy it is as a new believer to want desperately to witness to unbelievers
and to be totally unprepared to do so with wisdom. And, conversely how easy it
is for seasoned believers to leave the witness of Christ to others! The Word of
God tells us that our lives are to witness of Christ. We are to be letters of God,
written in our very being and seen in actions that witness to the person of
Christ in our lives no matter who we are with.
Personal Reflection
- Conduct is important to the Lord. How has the Spirit helped you as you live out
your faith when there are unbelievers present?
- For many, being in the community of faith is comfortable. In this passage it is
the community's responsibility to hold up those heading toward the front lines
of culture and faith. Who in our church needs particular prayer as they
encounter the lost on a regular basis?
- If I have withdrawn from sharing Christ with people, what would it take for me
to re-enter the battle for people's souls?
Prayer
Lord, You are the sovereign Lord of heaven and earth. Let me know your
presence as I live my life in relationship with others, believers as well as
unbelievers. Give me wisdom to not only speak with clarity about my
relationship with you, but to live in such communion with your life-giving
presence that others see Christ in me. Amen.
