Conception and Abortion: What you need to know

From Day 1

Day 1:

Conception. Genetic make-up complete. Sex, colour of hair, eyes, even build determined.

Day 17:

Development of own blood cells. Placenta established.

Day 20:

Foundation of entire nervous system.

Day 21:

Heart starts to beat.

Day 28:

Arms and legs have started to form. Eyes and ears, too.

Day 30:

Regular blood flow within closed vascular system. Ear and nose start to develop.

Day 42:

Skeleton complete. Reflexes present. Liver, kidney and lungs formed.

Day 43:

Electric brain wave patterns can be recorded. Movement begins.

7th Week:

In the 7th week, milk teeth begin to form. Fingers and thumbs, ankles and toes have also begun.

8th Week:

Baby can feel pain, grasp, swim. The unique finger prints are formed. Limb hinges are formed, and external genitals on male child appear. All organs present and functioning. From now on, only growth and maturity continue even as they will after birth, while growing to adulthood.

10th Week:

95 % of the known structures, features and organs, from tiny nerves to fingers and muscles, are in place. The thyroid and adrenal glands are functioning. Baby can make a fist; grasp an object stroking his/her palm; leap up and down within the womb with movements co-ordinated.

Week 16:

Baby is half of length at birth. Heart pumps 18 litres of blood daily.

Week 20:

Hair appears on head.

Week 28:

Eyes open. Baby can hear mother's heartbeat, digestive sounds and voice, as well as sounds outside the mother's body.

Week 40:

Birth. A landmark, yet only another stage in the process of growth.
