Advent Wreath

by Juliet Mascarenhas

Advent is the Season in the Calendar of the Church marked by the  FOUR WEEKS  of spiritual preparation and joyful waiting for the coming of Jesus at Christmas.  Advent is a time to celebrate light in the midst of darkness, as symbolized by the Advent Wreath ....

Advent Wreath

The Advent wreath represents God's love. The evergreen and the circle (wreath) symbolize that God is Eternal and always with us.

The candle represents Jesus, the Light of the World - the one Light that dispels darkness.

The four advent candles are lit for each of the for Advent Sundays. The three purple candles reflect the sorrow we feel for not loving Jesus enough. The rose candle is lit on the 3rd Sunday (Gaudete Sunday) in joyful anticipation of Christmas.

Material for the Advent Wreath

INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE THE ADVENT WREATH:

1.  Cut a cardboard ring of around 10 inches diameter.  Colour the ring green,  OR use green strips of crepe paper to wrap around the ring, making sure to overlap the layers as you go. This will ensure that the ring is completely covered with green paper.

2.  Glue the bottle caps to the under surface of the wreath ( like a stand ) to raise the wreath to a higher level.

3.  Glue on green shredded paper and some trimmings, such as artificial mistletoe, holly and pine cones from last year's decorations.  Of course, this is optional,  and only serves to make the wreath a little festive.

4. Glue the base of the candles to the wreath securely! Use tall and thick candles to prevent early burn-out.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE ADVENT WREATH:

Use the Advent Wreath as a centerpiece for your dinner table, and light the candles every day at dinner time ( when the family is present ) in the following sequence:

First week of Advent :         Light ONE Purple Candle
Second week of Advent :   Light TWO Purple Candles
Third week of Advent :      Light TWO Purple Candles & ONE Pink Candle
Fourth week of Advent :   Light ALL Four Candles

C A U T I O N :  To prevent fires!  Never leave the lighted candles unattended at any time.

PRAYER  THAT  MAY  BE  RECITED  WHEN THE  CANDLE  IS  LIT,  ALONG  WITH  THE  GRACE  BEFORE  MEALS:

God, our Father, Pour forth Thy blessing upon this Advent wreath, and grant that we who use it, may prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus our Saviour, and thus, may receive from Thee, abundant graces. Amen.

... Wishing  you a happy and blessed Advent season ...
