Were there Dinosaurs on the Ark?
Dinosaurs are popular today. They're on television and in the comics. We even have dinosaur stuffed toys. Scientists say that these unusual animals lived and became extinct over a hundred million years ago, so it's natural to wonder where they fit into the Bible. Most Bible experts believe that dinosaurs died out may years before the great flood that we read about in Genesis. So there wouldn't have been any dinosaurs around to put on the ark. Another reason we don't read about dinosaurs in the Bible is that the Bible wasn't written to tell us everything. It's not a science textbook. The Bible tells us about people and God's plan for our life.
[God is speaking] "Look at Behemoth, which I made just as I made you; it eats grass like an ox. It's strength is in its loins, and its power in the muscles of its belly. It makes its tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are knit together. Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like bars of iron." (Job 40:15-19, NRSV)
Genesis 7:1-24; John 1:3
Note to Parents
The Bible doesn't mention dinosaurs, but it does say that God created everything (John 1:3). Some verses, like the one about Behemoth, talk about animals almost as big as dinosaurs.
