Why Didn't Adam Die When God Said He Would?
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the fruit, sin entered the world. That was the first sin ever! And when sin came into the world, death came with it. There are two kinds of death, and both came to Adam and Eve and to the world. First, there is physical death. Although Adam and Eve didn't die immediately when they took a bite of the fruit, eventually they would die. From that moment on, all plants, animals, and humans would die eventually. Second, there is spiritual death. That means being separated from God, being his enemies instead of his friends. This death came to Adam and Eve, and to all of us, the moment they disobeyed God. The only way to avoid this death forever is to trust in Christ. That's why Jesus came to earth - to die in our place, for our sin, so that we might have eternal life!
When Adam sinned, sin entered the whole human race. His sin spread death through all the world. Everything began to grow old and die because all sinned ... For this one man, Adam, brought death to many through his sin. But this one man, Jesus Christ, brought forgiveness to many through God's mercy. Adam's one sin brought the penalty of death to many. But Christ freely takes away many sins and gives new life instead. (Romans 5:12, 15-16)
