Broken Hearted
by Ruby and Coral
I recently split with my boyfriend of 2 years and this has left me feeling miserable and bitter. To add to my woes, I had my exams that I couldn't do well because of my problems. I have been praying, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I have talked to a couple of my friends who have been through this kind of a situation, but there is nothing new in what they have said. I keep harking back to the past and am stuck in a loop. My question is, what do I do to get out of this rut and how do I know when God speaks to me?
Ruby: Let us examine the issue one by one. As usual, there always is a practical and a spiritual dimension to most every situation. Rather, look at this as an opportunity to examine your life, and I can see that you are doing this already.
Coral: Firstly, don't blame yourself; it may not be your fault at all! There's always two people (or more!) in a relationship, so please don't take the whole 'burden' of guilt on yourself.
Ruby: Find out why your relationship didn't work out. What are the reasons? Visualize it from God's perspective. Perhaps, He didn't approve of this relationship. Perhaps it was not the right one for you? What is the most important thing that you have learnt from this experience?
Coral: Its okay if you didn't do well once in your exams. I promise you they will come again. Life is a tougher exam! And this is one exam that we all must pass! Try to seek advice (and help, if necessary) from competent people (professionals/counselors). Take a break, visit a new place, or do things that used interest you again to 'break out the loop'. Also, find a quiet place and make time to spend quality time with the Lord.
Ruby: Here are just some of the ways to know if it's actually God talking to you or just your own mind.
- Consistency with the Word:
Gods voice will not tell us to do something that runs contrary to His word. Even after we have confessed our sins and still feel guilty, then we can be sure that it is not God talking. Always cross-reference what you are going through with the word of God.
- Conflict with the Flesh:
If what we hear urges us to gratify the flesh, forget what anyone else says, and do what we please, then it is definitely not God talking. God wants us to have fun, but in a wholesome, fulfilling way.
- Challenge to Faith:
Do the voices talking to you challenge your belief in God? If yes, then flee from those thoughts.
Coral: Finally, pray that the old memories be taken away from you. If its hard to pray, just be in His presence, and He will know (He does already!)
