Reflection for the Month: Strength of the Spirit

How can those persecuted for the sake of faith and justice experience the consolation and strength of the Holy Spirit? Have you ever felt depressed or terrified, yet found within yourself the strength to go on without knowing where that strength came from? Have you ever met someone who really cared for you and for others and wondered where that love came from? Have you ever met really poor or suffering people, and seen a light in their eyes that just did not seem to square with their situation? Have you ever experienced real care and love between people who should by all accounts be at one another's throats: Arab and Jew, Loyalist and Republican? Have you ever felt the power of the forces of hatred, greed, prejudice and violence, and wondered how they are held in check?

In such situations, you are experiencing God's Spirit, the Life Breath of God, at work in the human heart. Those who are persecuted for the sake of faith and justice can experience the presence of the Holy Spirit. When they find the strength to go on in spite of adversity, when they continue to show care and love for the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized, and when they refuse to bow down to the dark forces of hatred, greed, prejudice and violence, they are possessed by the very Life Breath of God, God's Holy Spirit.

Your Daily Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you came among us through mary's "yes" to God. Help me this day to say "yes" to the Father's call to me, so that in my words and actions, in times of work and leisure, you can be present in me through the power of the Eucharist to heal, to comfort and to sustain.

And I pray with the whole Church for the Pope's intentions this month: That those persecuted for the sake of the faith and justice experience the consolation and strength of the Holy Spirit.

That the Pontifical Missionary Works, proposed by the Pope and bishops, help all Christians to realize they have a part to play in the missionary activity of the Church.
