Prayer for the Month: Christian Unity
Early this month, a major ecumenical assembly took place in Sibiu, in Transylvania, Romania. Delegates from all the main Churches - Roman and Greek Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, Evangelical and Reformed - attended.
At a meeting of the preparatory commission for this assembly in Rome, in January 2006, the Pope said, ‘The Christian mission will only be fruitful and "enlightening" if Christians have the courage to continue down the path of reconciliation and unity'. He asked for prayers for this meeting that will seek to deepen the fraternal relationships between the Churches.
The Pope pointed out how important it is to reflect on the division of the Christian Community, and to pray with Jesus ‘that they may all be one so that the world may believe'. ‘Prayers for unity form part of that nucleus that the Second Vatican Council called for,' says the Pope, ‘a nucleus that includes public and private prayer, conversion of heart and holiness of life.'
