Prayer for the Month: Truth and Freedom
At a recent weekend retreat organized by Youth 2000 and Pure in Heart, to mark the second anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s death, I witnessed the ‘new life’ of the Gospel proclaimed by a new generation of young people. The retreat was built around John Paul’s teaching on love and sexuality. His message was presented by young people to young people who discovered in his teachings a truth that liberated them from the spurious ‘spin’ proposed by the culture in which they had grown up.
They were actually listening to the teachings of Jesus about marriage and divorce as expounded by the Holy Father, their spiritual Father. 'What you hear in the dark, you must speak in the light!' They understood how the world had often duped them into a false understanding which only resulted in disillusionment and sometimes despair. Who better than they know of the statistics surrounding suicide, binge drinking and drug-abuse, clear symptoms of a malaise that has gripped their generation despite the unprecedented material well-being they enjoy.
May the light of the Gospel continue to shine ‘like shook foil’ through these bright young mirrors of Jesus’ Risen Life.
Your Daily Prayer
Heavenly Father, send me your Spirit to guide me through this day. May my words, thoughts and feelings be for your greater glory. In the sacrament of the Eucharist, unite me with your son, who came to serve others, to sacrifice himself for the world.
I pray with Mary and the whole Church
