Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. (John 7:38)
The priest was new in the parish, so he set out to get to know his parishioners. He spent several hours a day visiting people in their homes, sharing a cup of tea and a chat with them. One day he was invited to a house for dinner. The meal was excellent, and the sense of hospitality was quite genuine. There was one thing that distracted him during most of the afternoon, though, and he decided to ask about it. All evening he heard the sound of running water. This bothered him, because he was afraid that a tap had been left on, and there was damage being done to some part of the house. When he drew attention to this, his hosts smiled, and explained the situation to him. When they decided to build their house many years ago, they discovered there was a water spring right in the centre of the building site. After some consideration, they decided what to do. They would develop the spring as a natural fountain, and build their house around it. Thus, at all times, they had a sense of a gurgling spring of fresh life-giving water right in the middle of their house.
The priest reflected on this, and used it for several sermons about the idea of having Jesus and His Spirit at the centre of our lives, and how necessary it is for us to be aware of the presence of that fountain of living water within.
If we have Jesus and His Spirit at the center of our lives too, we too will always know that we can drink from the living water from which we will never thirst again.
