What's Your Attitude?
by Fr. Jack McArdle with Aneel Aranha
While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
There were two young boys who differed from each other, in that one of them was a pessimist, and the other was an optimist. One of them was forever conscious of the things he did not have, and all the ways in which things might go wrong, while the other went to play every game of football, totally convinced that today his team was going to win.
One day, by way of experiment, they were put into separate rooms for an hour. The pessimist was put into a room that was filled with toys, and the optimist was put in a room that was filled with manure from the farmyard. When the hour was up they both were checked on.
The pessimist was sitting on the floor in the midst of all the toys, and he was crying. When asked why he was crying he replied that there was no drum. When the door of the other room was opened, the optimist was totally unconscious of being watched, because he was so busy. He had a small shovel and he was busily shovelling the manure to the other corner of the room. When asked why he was doing this he replied with total confidence "With all this manure, I'm convinced that there must be a pony here somewhere!"
What is your attitude to life? What is your attitude towards your faith? Do you look at Christianity as life-giving and a souce of great joy or do you look at it as a life-spoiler?
