The Great Wall
by Fr. Jack McArdle with Aneel Aranha
Discipline yourselves; keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.
(1 Peter 5:8)
One of the great wonders of the world is the Great Wall of China. It is said to be the only landmark on earth that is visible from the moon. It was built as a protection against invasion from neighbouring enemies. After all that mammoth endeavour, someone bribed the gate-keeper, who opened the gates and allowed the enemy through! So much for human endeavour!
The Christian life is a sign that should be seen from far and near. It is a sign of contradiction, of course, in that it insists there is another way of living than living with the values of a materialistic world. The only way to preach this message is to live it.
